I use a backup program called Macrium Reflect to save disk images of my hard drive to external drives in case of a fatal BSOD. AVG Free recently had a major update that required a reboot - Macrium ran fine up until then. Yesterday I tried to create a new backup job and Macrium crashed, saying

Macriurn Reflect has encountered a serious problem.
Dump file ‘c:\reflectv8.O-6635-x64-1O.dmp’ created
Please email this file to support@rnacrium.com

Macrium Support analyzed the dump file and found that

C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\Antivirus\x86\ashShell.dll

This is a Windows Shell extension and Macrium Reflect is crashing while reading from the Windows Shell.

I used a shell extension tool to disable ashShell.dll but Macrium still crashed - it's probably still loaded in memory and I need to reboot to really disable it, but then AVG may not run properly - the shell tool says

C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\Antivirus\ashShell.dll

is a " Context Menu AVG Shell Extension" and a "Icon Overlay Handler AVG Shell Extension" - that's DLL for Windows Explorer, which means disabling it might just remove AVG options from Explorer, or it could cause AVG to crash - don't know.

Anyone else run into a problem with an AVG shell extension DLL causing another program to not work properly, and how did you fix it? Just found something that complicates issues - I used Macrium and AVG free on my last PC, just checked a saved disk image from the old PC, and ashShell.dll is present, so it didn't use to cause a problem - now I'm really confused. Both Macrium and AVG recently had major updates that required reboots - one of the programs is now not happy with the other - I'm working with Macrium Support and they're saying it's an AVG problem, but I'm not sure about that since that DLL has always existed.
