Hello Diane,
Is there any specific file being scanned when the scan remains stuck? Is it always the same file?
I would suggest to update AVG and try again. You can also upload screenshot so we can see the issue.

I have reloaded AVG 2015 to try and rectify problem but is still freezing.  Can freeze anywhere from 70% to 96% with no threats showing.  Have scanned with other malware and they scan completely.
