AVG and malware and password change

Hi
I am not please with AVG because
It popped up on my laptop as I was doing some work a week ago and told me that malware was possibly trying to infiltrate my computer and to input my password if I was happy for this (malware induced) change to occur. I didn't put in my password but instead pressed "cancel"
The option returned again and again and again and would not go away unless I clicked on another program. In the background, AVG continued to ask for my password. What was annoying awas that when I did press cancel on the small pop up box, I could briefly see from a larger AVG box behind it that no virus scan had been run on my computer for ten months. What is the point of AVG if it is not running regular scans…particularly given that I am paying for it. I was so annoyed I cancelled my upcoming subscription. According to an email I then received from AVG, I can still use the product until 15 Feb

Not wanting to enter my password as this would indicate that I did want the malware induced change to occur, I went online and changed my password. AVG program on my computer does not recognize this password change. I went to uninstall AVG and to do so, I need a password. As it does not recognize the password change, I could not uninstall it. I restarted my computer. Still does not recognize password change. I now can not remember my old password (and Google doesn't either).
So please can someone give me some pointers on how to deal with this. I need virus protection but as far as I can see, AVG has been pretty pointless.

Thanks
NNSS
