It would appear that, with the introduction of Windows 10, Microsoft wants more than ever to control our computing.  The default Windows Defender antivirus/antimalware utility comes free with the OS, but based on previous experience with this product prior to Windows 10, I am less than impressed with what it has to offer.

To its credit, Windows Defender seems to be quite parsimonious in its utilization of system resources, but at the same time seems very limited in the user's ability to modify settings.

Can anyone comment on the advantages of, say, even the AVG Free Edition over Windows Defender, or to comment on their use of any version of AVG with Windows 10?

James, Prior to Win 8 Windows Defender was classified as an anti-spyware prog… With the introduction of Win 8 & afterwards it was re-classified as an AntiVirus prog which can conflict with AVG & it's actually disabled during the AVG install process.
