AVG AntiVirus Free causes computer to shut down very slowly

Hello David. Thank you for your continued patience.

I am just writing to confirm your support file was received and that it is actively being analyzed by our development team. It appears they have found the responsible components, but that is all I now know.

Stay tuned, and I will write back to you upon any new development. Regards, Shawn

Hi David,

We will clarify this for you.
If you check the Task Manager, you will see a few AVG process running in the back.
These are necessary for the AVG to perform what is meant for.
So those process will consume your shut down and boot up time of your PC.

Other reason for this could also be other security application installed in the same PC.
It is not recommended to have more than 1 security application because both will fight for the resource and caused conflict.
Which will eventually slow your PC.
Check if you have any other then the AVG.

Hello David. Just keeping you updated, that I have not yet received any follow-up from our development team.

I suspect there will be some unintended delay, as we are in the midst of the holiday season, and key members of our Development Team will be taking time off for the holidays.

I just want to ensure you, I have not forgotten you, and I will write back to you upon any new development.

Thank you for your continued patience. Regards, Shawn

David, the AVG setup will automatically detects whether the operating system is 32 bit or 64 bit and downloads the installation files from our server.
I am afraid there is no separate installer for 32 bit OS.
As informed in our previous message, please make sure there is no conflicting antivirus software on your PC.
If there is none, reinstall AVG AntiVirus free and verify the issue.

Hello, there,

Have just installed the newest version of AVG AntiVirus Free on my Windows 7 Home Pre x64 SP2 (not SP1) computer. But only the "File Shield" and the "Web Shield" components are installed.

After the installation, now it takes 1 minute and 40 seconds for the computer to shut down. But if "AVG Antivirus" and "AVG Internet Security System" are diabled (un-ticked) respectively from the Services and the Startup tabs in the MSConfig dialogue, then it only take 14 seconds to shut down, as before.

Have tried completely disabling AVG AntiVirus from the right-click menu of the program's SysTray icon, but no good.

Can this problem be solved?

Thank you.

Hi, Shawn,

Thank you for keep caring about this matter.

No rush indeed. I think the problem I reported won't be fixed until the next public release of AVG AntiVirus Free at earliest. But I believe it will surely be fixed because that's obviously a bug and can be easily fixed.

I like AVG AntiVirus very much in spite of this small bug, It's worthwhile waiting for the fix. Anyway I don't shut down my PC most of the time. Only sleep it.

The only other antivirus on my computer is Windows Defender which can't be un-installed but is disabled anyway by AVG Antivirus Free at it installation. So that should not a problem.

I have tried the following, to no avail:

(1)

Removed AVG AntiVirus from "Programs and Features" in Control Panel and then use AVG Clear for further removal. Afterwards used the online installer of AVG AntiVirus Free to install again, and restarted the computer.

After the installation, and before anyting was done to AVG AntiVirus, I immediatey shut down the computer. To my dismay, the time it took to shut down is still about 1 minute and 40 seconds.

(2)

Disable AVG AntiVirus from the right-click menu of its SysTray icon.

(3)

Select the option:"Delay AVG startup."

(4)

Select to use the passive mode.

(5)

Disable File Shield. (I only installed File Shield and Web Shield.)

(6)

Remove the File Shield component. That actually decrease the shutdown time to about 55 seconds.

I have submitted the support file using Sysinfo. Thank you.

Just some more observation on this shutdown problem… If the NIC cable is pulled out from my PC,  the time it takes to shut down is also drastically reduced to 20 seconds.

Hi,

Actually I'm the the poster of the first message of this discussion thread: David Huang.

Because I could not receive e-mails with the e-mail address that I had entered in my AVG account settings, I changed it to a new one. But afterwards I have not been able to log into this forum with the new e-mail address, seeing an error message:"Your request cannot be processed at this time. The site administrator has been alerted. Please try to log in later."

So far it's been six days. I can not but decide to create a new AVG account, which I'm using to post this message.

----

OK, I think I might have found out why…

On my Windows 7 PC, in the TCP/IPv4 Properties dialogue reached from Network and Sharing Center, the option:"Obtain an IP address automatically" is not selected. I manually enter an IP for my PC under "Use the following address."

The IP I set does not belong to the same segment (subnet) as that the default gateway's IP belong to. For example, the gateway's IP is 192.168.1.1 while the IP I set is 192.168.0.109.

I changed the IP to a new one (192.168.1.101, for exmple) that belongs to the same segment as that the gateway's IP belongs to. Then it only takes 20 seconds for the PC to shut down.

But I really need the IP that belongs to a different segment (long story). Is there a way to solve this problem?

Another question…

Although it now only takes 20 seconds for the PC to shut down, that's still 6 more seconds than the 14 seconds it took to shut down without AVG AntiVirus.

So, the question is:"Why does it need to take 6 seconds (still pretty long time) for the AVG AntiVirus service to be stopped during shutdown?"

PS_1:

Could someone please inform the administrator of this forum about the failure I have experienced with using the new e-mail address to log into this forum as David Huang, the first poster? I prefer using that AVG account of mine to post in this forum.

PS_2:

@Rakshith Rajkumar,

Thank you for sending that e-mail. If you still want to send it, please do so, but, of course, send it to the e-mail address that I now use to log into this forum.
