AVG Antivirus Free Edition seems to be constantly freezing/crashing programs

Hello Natalie,
We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Does all the programs work completely fine when you temporarily disable your AVG? To fix the issue, did you try repairing your AVG program (http://avgread.me/1BVxDSY) ? Have you also installed any third party antivirus program other than AVG? Thank you.

I am running AVG Protection Free (I used the remover tool to confirm this was the only AVG product present) on a Windows Vista 64 bit computer (would love to give you more specs but Windows Explorer has crashed yet again).

I believe that AVG is causing the freezing/crashing of all the programs I use (Firefox, Internet Explorer, and QQ). The latter is a video chat program I use for teaching, and the program freezing (especially when AVG is updating) is causing me serious issues for my teaching job. I have to disable AVG protection in order to teach via video chat.

I looked through many forum posts and have tried solutions such as deleting temporary update files and deleting AVG's web-browser add-on. I have also done other tasks such as a basic scan, disk defragmentation, registry cleaning, etc. I'm at my wit's end and unless I can get some answers I'll have to delete AVG.

Hello Karthikeyan,

Thank you for your reponse. The problem with installing an antivirus seems to be coming from old Trend Micro Security files. They have giving problems to many people who purchased Dell laptops with this free trial version installed.

The original problems with my computer (freezing up) are persisting. I can now say that besides slowing my system down while updating, AVG was not the source of the problem. I appreciate the technical assistance AVG has provided. Thank you.

Hello Karthikeyan,

Thank you for the suggestion, however, when reading the instructions provided on the link I read:

"Note: Always make sure that the file, folder or website is absolutely safe. Even legitimate files and trustworthy websites may be compromised."

Now, wouldn't adding ALL the programs I use (because they are all freezing) to the exceptions list effectively render AVG useless? If this is the only remedy that you can recommend, it seems that in reality I will have to remove AVG from my system. Thank you.

Hello,

My current status is leaving my students without a teacher, as my computer is now unable to connect to the Internet. At your advise to be sure I wasn't running any third party antivirus programs, I attempted to remove the trial version of Trend Micro Security that came with my Dell laptop. This has resulted in a wireless driver error that I am desperate to fix.

So, Avg is removed but your other suggestion has rendered my computer unable to connect to the Internet. Very discouraging.

I was able to reconnect to the Internet with the following solution:

Part I
Go To Control Panel
Click Network And Internet
Click Network And Sharing Center
Click Manage Network Connections
Click Local Area Connection
Under the General tab, click on Properties
On the list, click on the Trend Micro Common Firewall Driver
Click on the Uninstall button
Click on Yes for confirmation
Part II
Click on the Start Menu.
Click on All Programs.
Click on the Accessories folder.
Right-click on Command Prompt and options will appear.
Click on the Run As Administrator option and a new window will appear. Note: If a pop-up message appears, click on the Continue button.
Type the following: netsh winsock reset
Click on the Enter key of your keyboard and a message will appear.
Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

This was a problem caused by Trend Micro Security. However, I now find that I am unable to download any new anti-virus software. This could be caused by Trend Micro or AVG.

How can I confirm that I have successfully deleted AVG? Two files still show up when I scan with CCleaner:

Visual Studio 2012 x64 Redistributables    AVG Technologies    10/24/2014    12.6 MB    14.0.0.1
Visual Studio 2012 x86 Redistributables    AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o.    10/24/2014    10.2 MB    14.0.0.1

However they cannot be deleted, I get the message "Cannot delete MSI installer"

Please advise. Thank you.

Hello Natalie,
Thank you for the solution you have provided regarding the network issue. Once you run the AVG remover tool, all the traces of AVG will be removed. The Visual Studio 2012 x64 Redistributables files are Windows file. They will not have any effect.
Thank you.

Hello Natalie,
Thank you for your kind post and for your support of AVG products. It is customers like you that are helping to make AVG a household name.
Thank you for choosing an AVG solution for your computer.

Hello Natalie,
As the issue persists, we suggest you to add the programs that are slowed down by AVG to AVG exception list, this should stop the freezing issue. Please click on this link for the steps to add the program to exception list http://avgclick.me/AddException
Thank you.

Hello Rajarajan,

Thank you for your prompt response. I just ran the repair program and restarted my computer. So far, so good (Internet Explorer crashed but it might have been caused by something else).

I do not have any other third party antivirus program installed, though I did check my Windows Security and I have the firewall, malware protection, and the "other security settings" turned on. Could any of this be causing AVG to not work properly?

Thank you.

Hello Natalie,
Since your device's security is being monitored by AVG, all the security settings are being turned on. In case if the issue persists, please 'post' here in this forum. Thank you.
