AVG Antivirus Free - "Protection is disabled" error message

I've already resolved the previous issue (protection switched off) by reinstalling AntiVirus Free, so thanks for all the advice with that.

Unfortunately, since the reinstall I've been losing about 200-300MB of drive space every time I switch the computer on! When I search the computer for large files created in the last day it shows that a huge amount of space has been taken by AVG in the form of various data files.

As an example, Windows started today and said I had 48.7GB free. It now says 48.4GB and I haven't done anything except launch Firefox to visit this forum!

Could you tell me why AVG is taking so much disk space every day, and advise me how to fix this issue?

Thanks for all the advice - I've managed to remove all of the old AVG applications and successfully reinstalled Antivirus Free.

Just another question: I seem to have lost over 2GB of disk space since the AVG problems began. Do you have any advice on why this space has been lost and how I might get it back?

It's been four days now and I still haven't had a response from the senior technician team.

Could someone please get in touch with me about the issue?

I just performed a Windows search for files larger than 1MB modified in the last week.

I've edited the screenshot down to all files related to AVG.User-added image

Still no response from anyone in the senior technician team…

Any chance of a response about this please?

It's now June 22 - two full months since the issue was escalated to the senior technician team - and there has been no response. AVG is still stealing at least 200MB of space every time I use my computer.

Can I please get this issue dealt with?

Hello Peter,
I apologize for the delay in responding to you, the Files you highlighted on the screenshot are AVG virus database and AVG program updates, they are key part of AVG and it's protection. They may be downloaded multiple times a day in small increments or in bigger file when computer was not used for few days, so there is nothing wrong about it (You AVG is working fine on your computer).
Best regards,
Alok.

Hello Peter,
We are sorry to hear that. It seems that the product was upgraded to latest version. To fix this issue, we suggest you to run AVG repair(avgclick.me/RepairAVG) from control panel and that should enable the AVG Protection in your computer.
Thank you

Hi everyone!

And what about this?

AVG duality - Your computer is not protected and Your computer is protected in the same window

Which message should I believe?

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Peter, It will probably depend on where you are in the senior technician team queue.
AVG Guru

How can I find out where I am in the queue? Perhaps you could give me an idea how long it generally takes to hear from them. I think the issue was escalated to them on April 22.

Thanks

I've been using AVG Protection (free) for many months but yesterday the application changed to AntiVirus Free (looks completely different) and I keep getting the message that "Protection is disabled".

When I click into the Menu/Settings, under Components it says that the Software Analyzer is off. I can switch it on but it automatically switches itself off after a few seconds.

Please advise how to fix this problem.

Peter,
I completely understand your concern. However, our senior team is working on your issue and they will contact you via email as soon as possible. Your patience is much appreciated in this matter.
Thank you.

Thanks for your response. Your colleague yesterday implied that nothing was wrong, so I'm glad you appreciate that there is still an issue to resolve here.

How long do you think it will take for the senior team to respond?

I removed two separate applications (both called "AVG Protection") and a third one (called "AVG") from my computer before (re)installing AntiVirus Free. Control Panel said that one AVG Protection was taking up about 800MB and the other one about 600MB. I think the "AVG" app was about 600MB as well, so a total of about 2GB.

Now that all three of those have been removed, surely I should have more space on the drive, not less…?

It's been four days now and I still haven't had a response from the senior technician team.

Could someone please get in touch with me about the issue?

Hi Peter,

We are glad to know that your issue has been resolved, we would like to inform you that AVG AntiVirus Free will take at least 1500 MB of your Disk Space. Thank you for understanding!

Thank you!

Hi,

Thanks for your response, but I wasn't suggesting that AVG isn't working.

The issue is that it is taking large amounts of hard drive space every time I use the computer. If the files are just the virus database and program updates, I can't see why they should take up so much space. When I raised the query there were over 52GB of space free, now it is down to 44GB - and I've been deleting old files to counteract the problem - so I should now have well over 52GB free instead of 44!

This never used to happen with the old version of AVG Free so why is it happening now?
