Hello Donald,
We will help you sort this out. The issues might be because of old/previous AVG traces (simple reinstallation might not fix this issue).
In this case, I request you to remove AVG completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool and then do a fresh installation of AVG Antivirus free. This will ensure that none of the previous traces of AVG are left on your computer and you have an updated version.
Please follow the instruction ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product ) to run AVG Remover tool and AVG Clear tool.
After the computer reboots, you can follow the instruction to download/install AVG Antivirus free.
Regards,
Alok.
During the past week, I have been getting a red circle with a white "X" inside it on the AVG icon on the task bar of both my desktop (Windows XP) and laptop (Windows 7). When I click on this, up comes the normal AVG page with a notice in red: "You are not protected. Computer protection is turned OFF!!" (The "Fix Now" button will NOT work.) However, below this under 'Basic protection', it states: "Computer - Protected" (in green with green tick) and "Web & Email - Protected" (in green with green tick).
In my Microsoft Windows security centre (Control Panel), it clearly states that AVG protection is installed, up to date and is turned ON.
I decided to uninstall the AVG AntiVirus Free, and re-install it, hoping that this would correct the apparent problem. However, to my dismay, as soon as re-installation was completed, back came the same red circle with the white "X" - and the same message. Absolutely no change! I have not turned anything off. Am I covered or not? How do I correct these apparently conflicting messages?
I have had AVG AnteVirus Free for years, but have never had this happen before. Can someone please help?
