I've been using avast free for a couple of years and came back to AVG… wow has it gone down hill. First avg asks me nothing about my new tab preferences and then Hijacks my new tab page from about:newtab and replaces it with the search page. This is not even similar, about:newtab is not a search, it's a collection of bookmarks, how could AVG think this would be fine and people would be happy to lose functionaility. I was able to fix this by disabling Options>Web browsing protection>Enable surf-sheild. Then going into about:config and manually undoing the changes (search for newtab).
Then I went to check my email. 6 emails on server… downloading… then "Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disc space to copy the mailbox." then AVG popup saying it's scanning emails… but by then the thunderbird isn't interested in downloading anything because it's already been denied. In effect AVG is just stopping my email from functioning 100%. THUNDERBIRD for crying out loud. You would think this is one of the first things AVG mail scanner would be compatible with.
Running win10 if that makes any difference. Honestly I can't believe my experiance so far…
