I understand the experience you are facing with the browser. May I ask how you narrowed this down to AVG? Did you get any error message when trying to open firefox?
I suggest you disable AVG (Open AVG Internet Security > menu > settings > Troubleshooting > Passive Mode > Turn off the AVG Passive mode) and check it.
I run severela computers with different OS, one with XP.
AVG blocks my Firefox.
Why, how can this be solved? Have tried to download a new AVG, but same problem.

Karl, Win XP… Are you using SP3 SSE2?. Have a look @ this AVG article (http://avgread.me/1Ewajhi).
