AVG firewall keeps interfering with my VPN

Running the newest version of AVG internet Security. I was having trouble with my VPN unable to connect to their servers. I tried a number of things to get this to work before finally disabling my AVG firewall for 10 mins and trying again. This time it connected with no problems. I did a few more things just to confirm it was the firewall, suffice it to say it definitely is. I want to know how I can adjust my firewall setting to allow my VPN to work.

Hi Kris,

We are sorry to hear this.

We will help you to resolve the issue.

Please follow the below steps and try to turn on the VPN again:

Open the AVG program -> Hacker attacks -> Firewall options -> Application rules -> Open VPN and increase signal strength to high

Then try to access the VPN again.

We appreciate your efforts.

Keep us posted.

I am sorry to say that this did not resolve my issue, thank you for trying.

Hi there after speaking with AVG support i can confirm that the steps suggested by Santhosh Pannerselvam were correct but things needed to be taken just one thing more.

Hi Kris,

Please follow the below steps and try to turn on the VPN again:

Open the AVG program -> Hacker attacks -> Firewall options -> Application rules -> Open VPN and increase signal strength to high -> then try to access the VPN again. I followed these steps and the support member said that this was close but just missed the final step.

After those steps you need to open AVG settings -> General -> Troubleshooting -> scroll to the bottom and click open old settings -> Components -> Enchanced Firewall click on customise option -> then tick the internet sharing mode box. It seems that unless this option is ticked/enabled the AVG firewall would automaticly attempt to block any VPN other than the one offered by AVG. I feel that this is either poor design choice or a deliberate business strategy. Especially considering how difficult it was to find these options unless you knew what you were looking for. Unless you click on the open old setting link there are several options like the internet sharing mode that you cant even see. AVG used to be so reliable and easy to use but i am now disheartened by how it now seems that they are perfectly willing to hide options and features just to encourage you to buy their premium priced products. Combined with continuous pop ups from AVG about their other products/services and i am seriously disatisfied with the quality of service i had been paying for. I hope i am wrong and this simply was just a poor design choice but i will be keeping an eye on my AVG from now on and if this is a continuing theme then i will most definately not be renewing any of my subscriptions with AVG.

Hello Kris,
We are sorry for the way you feel.
Allow me to explain why we configure this firewall setting to resolve the issue. Firslty, it allows a trusted user to connect to the internet through your PC, or to troubleshoot problems with apps, devices, such as your printer, connected to the internet via your PC. Enabling this option opens certain ports which are usually closed and could help you to access some programs. We request you to disable this option after using the VPN service.
We will take your comments as a valuable feedback and pass it to our concern team for consideration in future.
