AVG Force Update Another Software On My PC

Hi Erick, Benni and everyone else who might have had similar experience.

I'd like to apologize for what happened here. AVG Free doesn't have the feature for updating other apps as Avast has. However in this case new CCleaner version was pushed through AVG and Avast update channels as part of security and maintenance update. CCleaner is also part of the Avast family hence AVG and Avast programs were used to deliver those updates as older CCleaner versions have often difficulties with updating etc.

Unfortunately, bad things may happen time to time and this is one those occurrences. We have learned our lesson here and already improved our internal communication about such changes/updates so we can prevent such a bad experience.

If you have any questions or concerns, let us know.

I only have AVG Free 32bit. I do not have PCTuneup. I do have this in Windows\temp:
_avg_
\avg_ash2
\CCleaner active
\Internet Explorer
\Mozilla Firefox (ESR)
\Opera
\Skype 8
ccupdate.exe
cc2.tmp
cc1CO.tmp…
The last two are the installer files for CCleaner. I know AVG downloaded these files; my firewall queried me and I blocked them. I know that I did not have ccupdate.exe on my computer beforehand. I use 5.01.5075, and ccupdate.exe is NOT in the CCleaner pgm folder, CCleaner is set to not update… I have not ever had Skype on my computer. I don't use IE. I don't have Avast. I like to have some control over what comes into my computer. AVG is pushing it.

So you suggest me to ask on piriform forum and I already did and here is the answer from them "and note it's not CCleaner itself doing it it's instead the installed antivirus owned by Avast (Avast, AVG) that has such capabilities to auto update a company-mates software such as CCleaner" you can see it directly on this thread  https://forum.piriform.com/topic/51623-ccleaner-portable/

So what is AVG response now ???

still no confirmation, once again what i want to know if AVG really did this, the same with AVAST

"Hi guys,
let me please answer some questions here. Outdated software is quite hard to maintain - in Avast, we still support Avast Antivirus product for XP despite the fact that only 5% of our costumers still use XP. Web servers (for updates, communication, …) must still support old methods which were used in this product many many years ago. We have still some users on Avast v8 and we cannot 100% guarantee they are safe for the latest threats, because Avast v8 doesn't contain some new shields or technologies available on newer OSes.

We have decided to upgrade all outdated CCleaner versions (v1.xx - v5.20) to the latest version. Portable versions were excluded. The reason is that old CCleaner version may not work as expected for for the latest software (your CCleaner is old, but users expect it will work perfectly also for e.g. latest Chrome which is updated every 6 weeks), maintenance of the latest version is much more easier for both developers and support and also from possible security issues.

I would be glad if you try the latest version and report any feedback so we can work together to improve CCleaner product for all our users. Thanks!

Petr"

please read this link, at least AVAST is more transparent about what they did since they can give confirmation rather than AVG that trying to blame this on my pc or asking for diagnostic file which is useless

i dont understand how you guys are 1 company(please the whole world know about this, AVAST acquired AVG) but only AVAST able to give confirmation.
this is really bad support compared to AVAST, based on your response so far you act as if the customer support is full of malware.

Hello

I'm using AVG antivirus free on win 7 64 bit

First of all I just checked my PC and found that my ccleaner free has been updated from version 4.03.xxx to version 5.41.6446 automatically without me knowing

As I searching about this, I found this https://forum.avast.com/?topic=217752.15 and this https://forum.piriform.com/topic/51446-my-older-v23xx-auto-updatedwhy/

Everyone say it happen because "Avast Software Update" but I only have AVG installed on my pc.

As I know Avg and avast is one company now so I assume AVG is the one that causing my ccleaner to update

I'm using ccleaner version 4.03.xxx and as I know the version that ccleaner get hack was 5.33.xxx version. I don't see any reason why AVG would force update my ccleaner version.

So why does AVG updated my ccleaner version without my permission at all?

Anyone experience this too ?

Hello Erick,

I can certainly take a look into this and determine if the issue is due to AVG or not. Can you please let me know if the an automatic update is checked in the CC Cleaner application? Please provide the screenshot [http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot] of the same (update version and update settings) to check and assist further.

still no reply again on this question, got tired of waiting for confirmation

should i make another new thread? gonna wait 1 2 hours before making new thread

Hello, still no response from senior team?

i tried to search about this matter again on google and found this
see this https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=217752.msg1457538#msg1457538 , 1 of AVAST reply on their forum about this matter and give confirmation. what about AVG? its okay to assume AVG is the updating ccleaner?

its kinda weird how long AVG take their time to respond to this while AVAST already give one

Thank you for the informations, Erick. In that case, the CCleaner upgrade must have been caused by something else as AVG Free doesn't have that capability. It's able to detect outdated software but AVG PC TuneUp is required to upgrade it.

I would suggest you to contact the CCleaner support and ask them the reason for the recent update.

Thanks.

Thank you for the reply, Jan. It was a concern when the file downloaded, but I realized it was healthy when I located the folder it was in.
