Hello Tom.
We regret for any inconvenience caused. We are aware that some of our customers are experiencing the same issue on Windows XP and Vista PCs. But we did not come across similar complaint from user running Windows 7 or later versions.
Please make sure "Remote Desktop Services" service is running on your PC as per the steps in this article. Then repair AVG AntiVirus free, reboot your PC and verify if the issue is resolved.
when i click the icon for avg free i get a black rectangle. this just happened overnight and looks like a buggy update. i see i am not the only one to have this happen at the exact same time. i already tried repair program and restart- did not work

I am having the exact same problem. AVG spontaneously displays a black rectangle mid-screen on my monitor display. This started last evening 3/19/19 on my Windows 7 pro computer just before midnight. By this afternoon 3/20/19, I am having the same problem on my Windows 8.1 computer and another Windows 7 home premium computer.
There is an AVG icon in the bottom left of the task bar. Click the icon and the black rectangle "minimizes" down into the task bar… Click the icon again and the black rectangle reappears on screen. If I right click on the icon, then select Close Window, the black rectangle disappears but then reappears spontaneously at a later time. This is occurring on all three different computers with AVG Free installed.
if I start AVG from the desktop icon or from the hidden icon task bar window, only the black rectangle appears. I.E. No info, no menus, no controls of any kind.
i believe this is a problem caused by an AVG update that was disseminated on 3/19/19 - 3/20/19. I know I am not running the latest release of AVG on any of the three computers, AVG on the Win8.1 is a little newer than the AVG on the two Win 7 machines, but without the AVG screen or its menu available, I cannot tell you what AVG versions I am running.
Im not really interested in removing, uninstalling, cleaning my current AVG installations and then reinstalling or any other BS and a lot of wasted time and effort to try to solve this problem. Something is wrong with your recent AVG update and all I want is for you to confirm that YES! THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE LATEST AVG FREE UPDATE AND YOU ARE WORKING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM!
