Hello Jondo,
Virus database updates are small (from starting from a few KB's) and are released several times a day. Program updates are larger (MB's) and are release few times a month (not regularly, depending on the issues etc.). Size of all update vary on what's being updated and how long is it since last update. We recommend you to keep the AVG in default settings and monitor the situation.

I would like to know what is typical Mb data usage for AVG free, winXP x86.
                                                & what is the update period.

I have limited usage & bandwidth due to country living so its quite relevant to my situation.
I've installed an internet  traffic monitor but will be a while till I get usable App/Process logged data.
