Hello -
So my win7 machine was completely fine - i removed mcafee, etc. and then installed the "new" AVG software FREE - antivirus. Then all h**l broke loose. I removed the software and I was left with a machine that could not connect to the internet. Being the experienced hack that I am I felt that I needed to resolve the issue - and post the solution so others (which there are) could see what i did.
So at the CMD line as an administrator
Things like - ping won't work, nslookup wont work for a domain name, tracert doesn't return more than one row, etc. Ping to an ip address (5.5.5.5) will work, but not ping google.com.
At first I thought it was DNS problem - so I checked internet connections (fine), DNS (fine), gateway (fine). I have three other machines going through the same home network w/o issue.
net stop dns (fine)
net start dns (fine)
ipconfig /flushdns (fine)
but still nothing…
So here it is. AVG will corrupt the winsock layer in the machine and basically mess it up.
simply open CMD and type netsh winsock reset
see microsoft help @ http://support2.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811259#kb3
5 hours wasted - hopefully this helps someone else.
