I used the AVG removal tool and AVG clear tool then reinstalled the latest version of AVG. It is working fine now. Thanks for the help.
I did this and it did recovert for a while. Two days ago, this happens again. Can official staff of AVG answer why?

Hence, I request you to update the program to the latest version and check the status of "X" icon on startup.
To update, open AVG Antivirus free interface.
Click on "Menu–>Update" and perform both virus definitions and program update.
If the icon persists, do share the (screenshot) of the window that shows "X" mark for AVG to assist further.

When I start up my computer the AVG icon in the task bar has an X and shows an error message that this computer is unsecured when you mouse over the icon. Does this mean that avg is not working at all or just that some of the components are not enabled? The computer is running windows XP with AVG free version 18.1.3044

Attached is a picture of the AVG icon with the x in it. I was unable to update using the method that you suggested. I clicked menu>settings>update. The definition update worked but the program update was greyed out and the update button was white. I then uninstalled AVG free and then Reinstalled it. It now is the current version. The version matches the version on my windows 10 computer. I suspect it may have something to do with windows XP. Does the red circle with black x in the middle mean I have no protection? The message says that ' Warning this computer is unprotected.'
