Thanks for your reply and sorry for two separate questions - hadn't realised that as the case!
I've tried to update  AVG today but still the same unknown error message and unable to uninstall etc.

Thanks for the follow-up info.  I cleared/uninstalled/removed & downloaded/reinstalled and all appears to be working perfectly now !

AVG says my virus definition is out of date and needs updating.  However, on attempting to update I get an unknown error message.  On trying to uninstall I get any of the following error messages - 0xe001f946, 0xe001f921, or verification of digital signature fail.  I'm going round and round in circles without success!  Can someone help, please?
