AVG Free not showing as installed

Hello Seth Renigar,

We appreciate your efforts in trying to fix the problem. Unfortunately, AVG can be installed on device with windows XP SP 3 or higher. It's not possible to get it for SP2.

For reference, visit https://www.avg.com/en-us/free-antivirus-download and check with System requirements.

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP Professional x64 SP2 (highest service pack available for x64), onto a brand new SSD drive, a few days ago.  I know its an old OS.  But I need it for something specific.  Plus, AVG specifies its for XP.

The first thing I did after the OS installation was to do all of the Windows updates.  After that, I installed AVG Free directly from the install link on the website, as I usually do on a new system (I've been using AVG Free for many years).

The Windows Security Center showed that AVG was in fact running.  So, I thought all was well, and moved on.

A couple days later, I temporarily installed an old HDD to copy some files from it.  Since this drive was from an old system that potentially could have viruses, I wanted to scan the whole drive first.

When I went to the start menu to open AVG, it wasn't there, at all.  Then, I looked in the system tray, and the icon wasn't there either.  I'm not sure if these were there from the start or not, as it wasn't something I specifically was looking for.

Anyway, Windows Security Center showed AVG was still running.  And, I also had a right click AVG menu in Windows Explorer.  When I tried to scan using the right click menu options, I got an error stating that the AVG UI (AVGUI.exe) was not running.  I knew something was seriously wrong at that point.

To try to fix the problem, I tried 2 different things:

First, I did the obvious uninstall, reboot, and reinstall.  Nothing changed.  It was exactly as before.

Second, I tried uninstalling using the AVG Removal tool.  This required one reboot for this process.  Plus, I rebooted again after the process was over as well, just to make sure.  Then, I tried reinstalling it again.  There was no change yet again.  It still doesn't show up in the Start menu, nor the System Tray, but the right click menus are there again.  But just as before, they give me the same error when I tried to use them.

Out of curiousity, I searched my computer for AVGUI.exe, and it doesn't exist.

Please help

Hello Seth,
You're correct, Windows XP Professional x64 only have SP2. However, AVG Free Antivirus can be installed on Windows XP SP3, any Edition (32-bit), Windows Vista SP2 or higher, except Starter Edition (32 or 64-bit), Windows 7 SP1 or higher, any Edition (32 or 64-bit), Windows 8/8.1 except RT and Starter Edition (32 or 64-bit) and Windows 10 except Mobile and IoT Core Edition (32 or 64-bit).
Currently, we do not have any protection/performance program for Windows XP Professional x64 SP2.
Regards,
Alok.

Windows XP Professional x64 does not have a SP3.  They never created a SP3 for this version of Windows.  The highest SP is SP2.
Does AVG not have a solution for this Windows XP Professional x64 then?
