AVG Free update failed - domain blocked

OK, quick update. I added the hosts file into the exceptions list and I now have access to it again.

That fixes the second issue, but not the third one.

Hi Tim,

In order to analyze it please provide us with diagnostic output using this tool (http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_SysInfo.exe).

Thanks

I am running a windows XP PC that I need to keep running due to some legacy applications that I use.

To make it safe now that Microsoft have discontinued support for Windows XP I have set the DNS in the IPv4 properties to 127.0.0.1, and have specified all of the websites that I access in the hosts file.

This works for everything except the AVG free update, which according to the Advanced Settings (detailed here https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Update-failed-or-not-working-in-AVG&l=en_US) is set to
quru.avg.com
bquru.avg.cz

I can add these into the hosts file, except that I also need the IP address to map them to, and they don't show up in any IP address searches that I have tried (nslookup …  8.8.8.8, ping, and various online ones).

What are the IP addresses that I need, or is there an alternative way to specify these urls in the hosts file?

thanks, Tim

Hi Tim,

Unfortunatelly it seems like there is some issue in update without DNS.

You could probably set names ip adresses in host but we can't tell how long it will work because ip adresses are changing and it is not supported/tested.

I reccomend using firewall to allow only wanted trafic.

Thanks

Thanks for the update Zbynek.

I updated my hosts file to add in those two urls set to 127.0.0.1

A few things happened. Firstly, I got an AVG security warning that a forbidden entry had been added to the hosts file, to which I selected for it to ignore the threat. It's nice to know it is keeping an eye on things!

Secondly, AVG has now blocked my access to the hosts file. Every time I try to open it in notepad or another text editor I get the message "Access is denied". This is no good - I need to be able to maintain my system. How do I remove this restriction.

Thirdly, and most importantly, it doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. When I click on the button in AVG to [Update now] it tries for about 30 seconds then returns "Update failed" and pops up a message: "The update control file is missing".

What's next?

Hi Tim,

It is guru.avg.com and bguru.avg.cz and it should be enought to set it for 127.0.0.1 (local host).

Thanks
