AVG Free won't update the program plus getting "unprotected" warning message

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I ran all three (AVG Clear, Remove, and Set-up) and ended up with the exact same behavior–the program update field is grayed out and the "You are Unprotected" message still appears.
The Remove program only detected AVG PC-tuneup (free), but did not detect any remnants of the Anti-virus program, so I did not click continue, as there are no issues with PC-tuneup. 

What else could it be?
I am running Windows 7 - 64 bit.

It's unfortunate that you are experiencing issues with installing AVG updates. This issue could be due to failed connection with our update server. I'd request you to use AVG Remover & Clear tools to completely uninstall AVG program and reinstall to resolve the issue.

Have been getting the "you are unprotected" message, but all indicators show protection is ON,
BUT–the program software is out of date and the software update function is grayed out (definitions update works fine).
Have already tried repairing in the Windows 7 programs menu. Not sure if re-installing will work any better…
