Regrettably, PCs manufactured before the year 2000 may not be able to boot from a USB drive. In this case, create a Rescue Disk on a DVD.

It is, in fact, quite a new laptop. One bought with Win 10 already on it.
But, I suspect, my friend (the owner) never turned Windows defender on.
But the article you reference tells me how to create a rescue disk or a rescue USB stick which is what I want

HI,
Can AVG be loaded onto a bootable USB stick.
I suspect a HDD is heavily infected and I don't want to load any of the software on it.
I just want to analyse the drive and booting an independant copy of AVG from it's own media seems the way to go.
Obviously I wouldn't use the "suspect system" to set up a bootable USB stick
