AVG Internet Security seems to be preventing Smart DNS setup

I run Windows 10 Home on a Lenovo ideapad 110. For some years I had AVG free basic antivirus and also ran a Smart DNS setup which allowed me to access UK sites which have blocked access by VPNs with no problems. Last week I purchased and installed AVG Internet Security and AVG VPN. Since then:
- I could not log into my BT Mail via Chrome
- My pc does not recognise the Smart DNS setup although it is correct
I uninstalled AVG VPN and now I can log into BT Mail.
But my pc still does not recognise the Smart DNS setup. I ran Uninstall and Repair on AVG Internet Security but it did not resolve the problem. Is there a setting within AVG Internet Security that will allow a Smart DNS setup? I use Chrome as my browser.
