Alan,
Thanks for the note about no AVG products for Linux. I understand that Linux is inherently somewhat more secure than Windows. So, if I make that move, I may just install a basic firewall of some kind.
Avinash (and other AVG specialists),
Thanks for your assistance. I did attempt to go to the Remote Support service, but it would not allow access.
So, I went to the free AVG download for Win XP. One of the options was to install a full trial version. That installed successuflly. It would not accept my registration key, but it did accept registration with the "log into AVG account" option. It looks like the problem is resolved.
with appreciation for your suggestions… warren
Hello Warren,
I am sorry to hear that. This issue occurs when the Microsoft redistribute files get corrupted and conflict with AVG. Please reinstall/repair the Visual C++ files in your computer using the below links and restart your computer to check the status.

Thank you for your assistance… However, the suggested solution did not work.
I have reinstalled the Microsoft the Visual C++ files using the x86 link that you provided.
After restarting the computer, the problem remains. The AVG Software Analyzer is disabled. If I enable it, it becomes disabled a few seconds later.
What do you suggest?
I have AVG Internet Security 16.151.8013 on an eeePC running Windows XP. This computer has been a bit slow with AVG running (computer is 900 Mhz with 1 MB RAM). After a recent AVG update, the AVG 'Software Analyzer' feature is disabled. When I click the button to "fix" the issue, it looks like it is enabled for a few seconds. Then, it resets to disabled. Any ideas?
Thank you!
Your invitation to let the AVG remote support team fix my problem is much appreciated.
However, at the beginning of this thread, I mentioned that this computer is running Windows XP.
As stated in your most recent message, "The Remote Support service is no longer available for Windows XP."
Although I have a paid account, perhaps I will try installing the free Win XP AVG software and see what happens. If that doesn't work, maybe it's time to toss Win XP and put Linux on this machine.
Warren, I appreciate your efforts in trying to fix the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to follow the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG to uninstall the older version using remover tool and don't restart your computer after you are done with the removal tool.
Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe . This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.
Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No" (we cannot recommend use the tool in safe mode, because there is a problem with compability)
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer".
After uninstall (using AVG Remover), I downloaded and attempted to install AVG Internet Security. Unfortunately, the installation failed. I did save the AvgInstallLog.cab (2.3 MB), but I don't know how to send it to you.
Warren,
We are glad to hear you successfully installed AVG virus protection on your PC.
Warren,
You could try to establish a remote connection if it is Windows XP SP3 OS you are using.
