I use PTP/IRIS accounts production software and historically setting an exception for the same has enabled that software to run without issues. Since the last update, even after setting a new exception, I am getting time out errors when I try to open the software. If I disable AVG this does not happen. The software house are suggesting either roll back to earlier version of find a new provider other than AVG. Is there a work around please?

I am sorry to hear this. I see that you have purchased the license for AVG Internet Security (1 computer).
Your version would have got updated to 2017, please open the AVG Internet Security dashboard. Click on "Menu–>Settings–>Components"
To the right scroll down to click on Customize of Firewall.
Click on "Network Profiles" and to the right change the profile from "Public" to "Private"
Also, perform the exceptions as mentioned this article: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-make-exclusions-from-all-scans-and-shields to add the business software to exception.
Let me know the status of this.
