AVG IS reinstalled, "afwServ.exe" process now 25%+ of CPU

Hello Colin.
We're here to help.
Please make sure you do not have any other firewall or antivirus software running on your PC.
Then, I'd request you to restart AVG firewall service on your PC and verify the issue.

Use the Run window to start Services (all Windows versions) Press the Win + R keys on your keyboard, to open the Run window.
Then, type "services. msc" and hit Enter or press OK to open the list of Services.
Double click AVG firewall service, Stop and start it again.

Appreciate your efforts in working towards fixing the issue, Colin.
Upon checking our records, we see that your concern has been forwarded to our senior team. They'll analyze the logs collected from your computer & reach you through email to proceed further.
Regarding the update, version 20.6 has been released recently. It would be released gradually across the globe. It might fix the issue. However, we'd suggest you to wait for an email from our senior team.
Thank you for your understanding in advance!

Hello,

I have used the remote session to show AVG support staff the problem. Logs have been collected for analysis. That's helpful, thak you.

I see that an update to AVG IS has been released today (30-Jul-2020). I cannot find the release notes for the update. Does it fix the reported problem with the afwServ.exe process?

Colin.

Hello,

I’m sorry, but I had to revert my systems to previous backups in order to be able to continue working from home.

I do have a copy of the “bad” system with the latest AVG update on it, but I don’t know when I will have time to revisit it. When I do, I'll let you know, unless a newer release fixes the problem.

The support has been appreciated, in that you’ve taken an interest and offered to be involved, which is much better than a lot of companies.

I hope that the log files you’ve collected help you to track down the problem with the afwServ.exe process. I think it’s some kind of memory leak issue.

Cheers, Colin.

Having earlier completely cleared and reinstalled AVG IS, I now have the "afwServ.exe" process consuming around 25% of the available CPU. It's a 4-core Xeon and the 25% load is spread across the 4 cores, not on a single core. This is not helpful.

Colin.

We'd suggest you to take advantage of our addition support to investigate further on this, by following the steps in the email that has been sent to you.

The concerned team is investigating on the issue & you'll hear from them at the earliest, Colin. Thank you for updating the status.

Hello.

Here is some more information for you:

Having just tried the update to 20.6.3135 (build 20.6.5495.561), it's much worse than before!

The afwServ.exe process is now consuming close to 50% of the available CPU all the time and memory use is also gradually increasing.

I have collected and sent a sysinfo log.

I shall revert to a known good backup.

Colin.

Hello Avinash,

Repeating the removal and reinstallation process has made no difference.

The afwServ.exe process is still consuming around 25% of the available CPU performance, with peaks above that. It affects my ability to use the machine.

Do you have a fix for this problem?

Colin.
