AVG keeps updating and has hardly stopped this morning

in 2 hours this morning since I logged on my laptop AVG has been updating on and off and subsequently slowing my laptop down and I need to get on with my work - there's hardly a break in between when it stops and then starts again

I ended up rebooting as it just wouldn't stop updating and thankfully its now stopped but will remember what you suggested - however, it should be up to date as I allow it to do it automatically and have accepted all updates etc.
