Running Windows XP SP3.

I downloaded the offline AVG installer package and on a USB thumb drive carried to my XP SP3 system that is not connected to the Internet

When the install was 99.9% complete a message about  "install failed - not connected to internet" appeared. 

It's the "offline" install package, so does it still need to be connected to the Internet (maybe just once at the end) or might there be some other reason the install failed?

This isn't the experience we want you to have, Jose. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused.
We'd suggest you to perform a clean installation of AVG.
To do so, follow the below steps :

  • Download and run AVG Remover to remove all AVG products.
  • Open AVG_Remover.exe.
  • Click Yes in the User Account control dialog.
  • Click CONTINUE to agree with AVG’s license agreement and privacy policy.
  • Select the installed version of AVG.
  • Click Remove, then click Restart to restart your PC.
  • After restart click Run in the Open file – Security Warning dialog and allow AVG Remover to remove any residual files.
  • Restart your PC again.
  • Once uninstalled, download, install AVG AntiVirus again.

Help me understand how AVG Internet Security will help - will that install without an Internet connection?

When you tested the installation of the offline scanner on a system with no Internet connection what was the result?  
Did it install correctly or did it not?

We can install AVG Internet Security on PC with no internet using offline installer.

You can just download and save the AVG Setup file to USB drive and connect the that PC.Then, you can try to install and activate it.
