I apologize for the inconvenience. It could be possible that the latest updated have failed to install completely or the connection with update server was interrupted. I would suggest you uninstall the current version and reinstall AVG to resolve the issue.
To uninstall, go to control panel and uninstall AVG Internet Security. Then refer this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-Ultimate to reinstall the updated version of AVG Internet Security program.

I periodically get a message saying my AVG Ultimate is out of date. I try to go through the update process which does not seem to work and I can not get rid of the message.
