I'll pass. Once upon a time, I did indeed have AVG Free on my computer, BUT hit a particularly nasty trojan, which AVG did remove, and whenever I rebooted, Windows restore put it right back. Had to study up on that particular trojan and use another program which finally removed it. Also had some very inconvenient false positives with AVG Free which damaged or removed files I wanted untouched. That's why I was happy to get the Rescue CD, which could scan for viruses without the operating system interferring under any circumstances. And finally, I doubt AVG even runs on the system I have. After all no longer supported at a bet.
SE,
The older versions of AVG are no longer developed and supported. So you cannot update the program using rescue CD to the lastest version. I would recommend you to install the latest program manually using the offline installer link- AVG Internet Security | AVG installation files
SE,
Sorry for the confusion you had. AVG Rescue CD is a standalone set of tools that can be started from CD or USB flash disk. It can be used to recover computers that are not able to boot or are infected in a way that will not allow normal operation.
The AVG Rescue CD is based on a Linux operating system. When started, it will allow you to start basic AVG functions from a simple user interface, as well as other administrative tools. The CD also features all standard functions of Linux operating system and can be used as a live CD. We cannot update your AVG products using AVG Rescue CD and to fix this Invalid binary update file issue, the only possible solution is you to have reinstall AVG Free version.
Go to Control Panel -> Programs and features -> Uninstall -> uninstall AVG free and restart your device. Download offline installation file : https://www.avg.com/en-us/download.prd-gsr-free for AVG Antivirus Free to have latest version.
Mmm… Did you actually read what I stated as my problem? I ALREADY KNOW how to create a USB Flash Drive with the Rescue CD on it which is basically what that link you gave back to me is about. HOWEVER when I download the virus definition files… whatever in the basic 6 has changed since I last did so… I get the error that I indicated above. NOW I been doing this for over a year… I go to this page… AVG AntiVirus FREE | AVG-installasjonsfiler Grab whatever are updated definition files. I reboot using said USB Flash Drive to get the Rescue CD going, then flip through the different menus to update the virus definitions using whatever files I downloaded (most often just 1 but sometimes 2 files) to make it "current". BUT for WEEKS now it DOES NOT perform the update. Instead it says the file I downloaded is invalid. Why don't YOU prepare a USB stick drive with Rescue CD on it and download the 6 virus definition files, THEN do an offline update in the same manner that I do? Given how AVG doesn't seem to allow anyone to easily FIND the Rescue CD on their site, my guess is some bright light changed the format of the binary files representing scanner updates BUT forgot all about the impact said change would have for someone using the Rescue CD.
Hello Se,
I understand your concern. Please refer this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-use-AVG-Rescue-CD regarding AVG Rescue CD and update the version.
Thinking I had a too old version of the Rescue CD I recreated my USB stick drive using version 120.160420 and am still getting the above message. This has been occurring for about 3 weeks at this juncture. The Rescue CD seems to be rather hard to find on the AVG web site.. certainly not given any prominence.. which makes me wonder whether it is even supported any more although I did download it from their web site even so.

@Alan I used to program at one point in my life and also provided support for what I was involved in programming, and my clients would have killed me if my answer to a problem was "oh that's a "business" product"… implication being that I couldn't care less… to flip them off. IF a user came to ME with an issue on a product, whether it was under my direct jurisdiction or not, I would at the very LEAST push the issue they had on to the proper person, NOT leave it up to them to go back onto the "merry go round" of trying to find help. But then that's me.
@Alok Seems to me, AVG Rescue CD and AVG Secure CD are one in the same. Some call it one thing and others call it another. Yeah I'm still using it on a computer with Windows XP, although why it matters I don't know, since when you boot into the Rescue CD, it's one of the Linux flavours that the tool runs under. As for "networking" I have NONE in my home. In other words, NO internet. When I want internet, I take a walk down to my local coffee shop where there is free WiFi. For whatever reason, the Linux driver or drivers that come with the Rescue CD do NOT work with this here laptop. (Dell Latitude D630 with an Intel branded WiFi card inside. That's if it matters.) Simply, I download the latest virus definitions from the AVG web site… at a coffee shop… Copy the the latest file… usually just one has been updated… and copy it to my Windows root drive… as in C:. Then I plug in the USB stick drive on which I have Rescue CD, boot or reboot into that and through Rescue CD, update. Before the end of last month that method worked just fine. Then I started getting this "invalid binary file" error when I tried to update and that's what I have been seeing ever since whenever I try to update. Abirami Shanmugam, one of your AVG cohorts claimed in a posting to another user of the Rescue CD that the Rescue CD was "no longer developed and hence no updates were planned." That message was dated September 27, 2017. I came upon AVG Rescue CD because other people out there had it on their lists of the "best" free antivirus scanners available. Now I know AVG is free for home users but I have a lot of "crap" on my computer as it is and in my experience of many years, having a resident virus scanner is more trouble than it's worth. Norton was notorious at one point for being hard on a system, their own claims beside the point. I think what I'm looking at is searching for another tool which works as I WANT it to do, NOT what the purvayer of a particular product thinks I want. For example, I've tried Vista, 7 and 10 and they do NOT work for me. Drives me nuts that whenever I wish to do anything I have to FIRST run it with Administrator privleges, EVEN something so simple as to copy or delete a single file. NOT to mention, Windows blocks me from getting inside all kinds of folders I need access to. The final killer for me was when Microsoft decided to put their own spyware on Windows 10 and THEN onto 7 and 8. And final nail for me was I didn't even get the choice of whether I wanted updates or not in Windows 10. All and all, thank you Alok for all your effort on my behalf. At least to didn't try to palm me off like Alan above. You at least TRIED.
