Even with the latest update of AVG Internet Security, the - very annoying - problem still persists.
But I think I found a solution for the problem here (https://lucianwebservice.com/how-to-tutorials/thunderbird-connection-to-server-pop-gmail-com-was-reset-error-solution.html), solution number 3.
I activated the option network.dns.disableIPv6 (set the value to true, that is, disable IPv6 in Mozilla Thunderbird) and so far - even after restarting my PC - the issue seems to be gone.
Will keep an eye on this in the coming days to see if it's persistent, fingers crossed.

Since a couple of months I got problems connecting to my GMail account using Thunderbird. After lots of reading and investigation, I found out it's the e-mail shield of AVG which is causing this issue.
Whenever I have the problem and I then switch off the e-mail shield of AVG, everything works fine again. I can connect to GMail with my Thunderbird e-mail client smoothly.
Why is AVG blocking/resetting my GMail connection? As a result of the above, I've definitively switched of my AVG e-mail shield until that issue is resolved.
