AVG scan can't be stopped or cancelled

Firstly, please share us a screenshot of your 'Task Manager > Processes' window clearly showing AVG consuming large quantities of system resources once a week.

Every few days AVG decides to do… something… in the background and eat 50% of my CPU. There is no scan running according to the GUI. There is no scheduled scan that can be changed or removed. The scan can't be stopped with Task Manager. I have to sit and wait for AVG to finish whatever it is it's doing so I can have my computer back. 

I've spoken with AVG's support in the past and they did not believe me when I told them what was happening. I have receipts. I can prove what AVG is doing. Has anyone else seen this?
