AVG Scan Sticking

For the last 4 days when my (Windows 8.1) laptop starts, immediately a 'scheduled' scan runs (but there is no such schedule scan set) and then sticks whilst scanning the registry (but not always on the same file). The AVG GUI will not respond in any way and the process cannot be stopped by using Task Manager, only a complete restart will kill the process. Whilst the 'scan' is going I am also prevented from accesing the internet  - no page will 'open'. No record of the scan appears in the Scan reports.

I have run various programs to remove Registry errors and also uninstalled/reinstalled AVG but this is still happening.

I have looked at the internet and there are reports from 2 other AVG (free) users who are experiencing exactly the same problem.

What esle to do ?
