when I open the AVG console, on the homepage it says at the top "You are not protected" and underneath in smaller print it says "Computer protection is turned off!", to the RHS of this there is a button "FIX NOW".
This FIX NOW button does nothing whatever I can see, click it and nothing happens. Below this section of the screen it says I have full protection on all categories, the virus definitions are today and the last scan was performed today.
Is there a major problem which is leaving it dysfunctional, or should I go back to Microsoft Defender which always did its job silently and, as far as I am aware, completely effectively?

Hello Karl,
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with AVG Update. In this case, I request you to repair AVG Protection (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG), update (open AVG Internet Security/AVG Free Antivirus > menu > settings > update) it one more time and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please check if your AVG program is working fine.
Best regards,
Alok.
