Hello Matt,
We realize this must be upsetting.
It looks like this should have happened due to AVG Secure browser.
Are you able to change the format to PDF? You can right click on any one of the file and select "properties" and "change".
Select "Adobe" and click Ok. All the files should change back to PDF format.
If this doesn't happen, then try uninstalling AVG Secure browser as mentioned here and see if that helps.
I am having the same problem on the work computer. It never changed the file type. But it won't load on acrobat anymore it opens in your web browser. Because it no longer opens in acrobat I can't rename the files or do a few other things. I need this setting turned off, so I can work with SDS sheets.
Thank You,
H.George

My PC had an update and all the pdf files were changed, had a new icon, and no longer opened in Adobe Acrobat. I was able to figure out that AVG secure server had taken over all the pdf files. This wasn't working for me and I couldn't figure out how to change them back so I uninstalled AVG Secure Server. My pdf files show an Adobe icon but it is different than the icon prior to AVG taking over and the only way I can open them is by opening Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat and opening them through the program. I also am getting an error message or "invalid annotation object" on every file.
AVG, this is not the first time you have caused me problems. For a security company I feel like you are more of a virus when you take over our PCs.
How do I correct these problems so Adobe Acrobat and my pdfs will functional correctly.

Heather, we regret for the inconvenience caused.
Have you tried to follow the steps mentioned in the previous thread?
If not, please try to change the format to PDF? You can right click on any one of the file and select "properties" and "change".
Select "Adobe" and click Ok. All the files should change back to PDF format.
If the issue persists, please try to uninstall the AVG Secure browser and check for the issue again.
