AVG upgrade. Not working

Please help! AVG was running fine om my W7 PC until upgrade (ZEN?) today which has installed a program I cannot use. First pc froze with a black stuck avg screen. Had to unplug to get started again.
 
Now I cannot get to settings - on the AVG Antivirus console Menu is grayed out. On the ZEN console Menu> Settings it only allows you to change a device name, nothing further. It also appears that email is no being scanned as there is no message as email comes in and no slight delay as there usually is. Plus Windows Defender (which I use on a stand-alone basis to check for malware once a week) has been completely disabled.

Please, why are you doing this? Now I have to figure out how to get rid of AVG and what to replace it with. Very distressing. I've been using AVG for years.

  1. Restart your PC when the restart option is displayed on the remover tool screen.
    4)Once you have logged into your PC after the restart, please go to C:\ drive and delete the "AVG REMOVER" folder manually.
    Note : Please use the AVG Remover tool mentioned on the article to uninstall the AVG program more effectively.

If I go through all of this and through the hasstle of finding the AVG free without ZEN, how to I know that at the next update it won't just install ZEN again with the same problems?
I need to know this in order to decide whether to battle on with AVG or investigate other options.
