AVG using over 90% of CPU resource

Hi.  AVG updated today to free version 17.3.3443.0.  Ever since, the PC has been very slow and the various AVG components are taking up around 90% of my CPU resource - continuously.  The main culprits are AVG Antivirus (32 bit) at areound 22%, AVG Service (32 bit) at around 24%, AVG Software Analyser at around 18% and AVG Watchdog Service at around 23%.  I've restarted the PC a few times but to no effect.  I tried to "repair" the isntallation but it hung at 27%.  Any advice would be apprecaited!  Thanks.

Hello David,
We are sorry to hear that.
In this case, we suggest you to uninstall AVG using the link: http://avgread.me/1DEtNP0 and then check with the CPU usage.
Please do check whether the CPU usage is reduced.
If the issue persists, please do get back to us and we will help you.
Thank you.

Hello David,
We understand your concern.  To check the root cause please click the link to install AVG free version http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_1817.exe and check the CPU usage .
Thank you.

Hi.  I uninstalled (not repaired) AVG and was prompted to restart the computer.  When I did, AVG was still installed and operational but the CPU usage is right down in the 10 to 20% in total.  Does this suggest that there may have been two versions of AVG running and, if so, would this have been what was causing the high CPU usage?  If so, why would there be two versions installed - wouldn't you expect the older version to have been removed when the later version was installed?
