I understand this must be upsetting. I will help you to fix it.
I suggest you to repair the AVG Internet Security Unlimited and check if that fixes the issue.
To repair your AVG please follow these instructions:
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Note: Click Settings first if Control Panel is not available in the Start menu.
2. Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
3. Select AVG Internet Security in the list of programs.
4. Click the Change or Change/Remove button.
5. Select Repair.
6. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
7. Restart your computer.
If issue persists. please provide me a screenshot of the error message.

The anti virus protection will not update - apparently a problem with permission related to the proxy.exe file

I regret for the inconvenience caused. Please remove AVG Internet Security completely as per the steps mentioned below:
1. Use the link https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe to run the AVG Clear tool.
2. Open the AVG Clear tool, click Yes in the User Account control dialog.
3. Click No in the Windows safe mode dialog.
4. Select the installed version of AVG and click Uninstall. Then Restart computer.

Hi Akash,
Many thanks for your early response. The procedure did not work unfortunately. Each time i log I am informed that my antivirus protections needs updating. This has occurred each day for the past seven days or so. When I click update the program does not run but I see that the there is a message stating that the virus is updated (small writing). However the main heading remains "RES . A restart does not provide active protection. As reported previously I get a message to update my virus protection!!! I have played about a wee bit in feable attempt to correct this annoyance. I note that if I reset to factory settings I see VIRUS PROTECTION activated. This is immediate without any update download.
Plerase advise as this is driving me nuts and I cannot trust the message "VIRUS PROTECTION IS ACTIVATED"
