We suggest you to restart the computer in safe mode http://avgclick.me/rebootintosafemode and see if that fix the issue or leave the screen is the AVG watchdog initializing screen and once the scan gets complete, you will be able to use the computer as usual.

I am experiencing problems with the Watchdog freezing my startup as others are having.
I do not have time presently to mess with this problem, and will consider switching services if necessary. That is unfortunate as AVG has served me quite well, both the free and the premium. But, I do not have the time to deal with this problem.
