AVGUI.exe using 99% of CPU

Just a guess here, but if the computer is as old as the windows program, this will most likely be the problem.
2 things, you will not have much memory (RAM) 4gb if you are lucky, 2gb if not so lucky.
And the CPU will most likely be single core.

Same exact problem with a 3,4 GHz Intel XEON 12GB RAM
So this has nothing to do with the laptop being too old, being single core or not enough RAM.
I can't dare to turn off this computer because it took about 10 hours before the CPU was idling normally last time I did.
Stop making excuses and fix the promlem!

Recently I have been having the exact same problems as Arlene Benham and Per Wellton have reported. I am using an aging Athlon64 computer with Windows XP that I'm planning to retire anyway, but even if it is outdated and no longer supported by Microsoft, no process should run at 99% CPU for an hour.

After reading responses on this forum last night and coming to the conclusion there is no definite solution to the problem, I made my own attempt at cleaning up. First I removed the AVG PC TuneUp that I installed a while ago but since then has expired and only worked as a nag screen. Then I removed the AVG Web TuneUp, which apparently is separate from AVG Antivirus Free. While the AVGUI process still was running at 99%, it would release its iron grip within an hour of powering on Windows compared to otherwise when it can be hogging the computer for 2-3 hours.

Now this morning when I powered on the same computer, the extra AVGUI process no longer starts! That is, AVG Antivirus Free is activated and is running as it should, but the process that was low on memory but high on CPU is gone! Whether it originated from PC TuneUp or Web TuneUp is hard to tell, I would guess the second. Perhaps I am rejoicing too soon, time will tell if I run into problems again but for the moment I am satisfied, even this is not a recommended solution by the support staff, just random deletion of components I believe I don't need.

I’ve had this problem before and now it’s back again.
Cleanup, restart, uninstall, reinstall doesn’t work.
It seems to be connected with the virus definition package just downloaded.
The problem will not go away until the next package is downloaded.

By the way this is not restricted to avg.
I tried installing others such as avant and (can’t remember now) and they were even worse!

Highly irritating and time wasting. What is the solution?

Well, $!($%*!, it's doing it again.  After all this time I finally tried reinstalling AVG.  (It takes a lot more than the "few minutes" "quick download".)  A "deep scan" showed no problems.  The computer worked OK for two or 3 sessions.  Now AVGUI is hogging no less than 95% of the CPU again, and 99% most of the time.  I've wasted half an hour trying to print one photo and the print utility just hung.  Opening file folders is significantly stalled by this problem.  I have two old 'puters running XP and it only does this on the laptop.  Yes, I uninstalled, yes, I ran the cleanup tool, yada yada.  WTF, AVG?  I don't like internetting without antivirus but I'm gonna have to uninstall the effing thing again.  And, attaching a screenshot doesn't work because the image-attachment 'mountain' icon doesn't work: "javascript: void".

I have this same issue 99 percent constant process avgui.exe.
10 year old Laptop, 2GB XP.
None of the fixes have worked, except having no anti-virus program at all!
Please support can you send an email with your link for forwarding the sysinfo tool logs data to you.
Or is it on your website somewhere?
Many thanks

I couldn't even find my question again when I logged in after posting it.  The notifications of replies finally came through Yahoo.  Thanks for the replies, but after a couple more days of frustration I have uninstalled AVG and the CPU is back to normal.  Will think about reinstalling it after I see how the latest version perfoms on my desktop 'puter (also old, runs XP.  Hey, I like XP).
I did find the Per Wellton thing while looking for my own post, but, TL,DR and it was easier to uninstall.

This is just a post to say that AVGUI has been eating all of the time on both of the dual processors in my machine for the past three years.  It happens shortly after the machine boots up.

Since the AVGUI hog eats all of the time for only about 5-10 minutes, I simply go out and make a cup of coffee and by the time it is finished the machine is back to normal.

As I have seen in all of the posts on the AVG site relating to this failure for programmers to fix this problem I have not addressed it since it is only a small bother.  I have no desire to spend hours (days?) to run diagnostics for AVG so that they can come back with “fixes” that result I no success to solve the problem.  My time is more valuable than wasting it in something that won’t go away.

AVGUI.exe is using up to 99% of my CPU according to the task manager.  It has stalled everything on my laptop – even saving a document.
I followed all of the steps here:
Why does AVG Free use over 50% of my CPU all the time? | AVG
exactly as directed.
It had no effect.
Repaired, and self-protection module is unchecked as directed.  Now there are TWO lines for AVGUI.exe in the Task Manager.  One says 00 CPU and nearly 147,000 K of memory.  The other is only 58,000 K of memory but is still using 95%+, and the CPU usage is still at 100%.
Running XP; yes, it's an old laptop.
I also tried disabling AVG temporarily and that didn't work either.
Now what???

Arlene,

This isn't the experience we want you to have and I apologize for the inconvenience. Share the screenshot https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=How-to-create-a-screenshot&supportType=home of task manager which shows AVG consuming 99% of CPU.

Let us know if you are using AVG Antivirus free or AVG PC Tuneup trial version. Please uninstall AVG from Control Panel -> Programs and features -> uninstall, check CPU usage for few hours and share the screenshot of task manager.

Reinstall your AVG product from our official website: https://www.avg.com/en-us/download and check if the issue persists or not.

Yes, I got that, all three times, and I got the e-mail.  I DO have AVG installed, and that is what is causing the problem, which should be apparent from the screenshot showing AVGUI.exe at 96%.  >sigh<
The e-mail asks me to download and install something else, and as I stated, at the moment I am reluctant to add any further software from AVG to my machine.
After running for three hours, AVGUI.exe has, for the moment, stopped hogging all my CPU.
It would be nice if someone explained what this process is supposed to do.
Thanks.

Honestly?  Right now I am rather reluctant to download anything else from AVG onto my machine.
I'll think about it.  After I've had time to do a complete backup of everything on it and create restore points.  Which I don't right now.
