Buyer Beware

Some years ago I wanted to get good internet security, so I bought a package that had everything. It was called Ultimate, but a year or so ago I started to receive notifications about additional products I needed. I contacted AVG and pointed out that something can’t be described as ‘ultimate’ if it doesn’t offer you ultimate protection. I was told I could add Breachguard and Driver Updater to my package and I would then have the ultimate ‘Ultimate’ package. I asked if this was a genuinely ultimate package and I was very specifically assured that I had everything and I would not need to buy anything else. When I went to my account, sure enough I had one subscription for Ultimate and Breachguard and Driver Updater were now included.

Fast forward to today and I get a notification that now there’s something else I need to buy! I contacted AVG again and at first the agent wouldn’t believe me that Breachguard and Driver Updater were part of my Ultimate package. I don’t lie, so I gave him remote access to my computer where my subscription page was open. He checked and even tried downloading one of them to make sure it was genuine. Obviously it worked just fine.

It seems that what has happened is that the previous agent has deliberately lied to me to secure a sale for those two programs and then put them in my Ultimate package to perpetuate the myth that I was buying the ultimate ‘Ultimate’ package when it was nothing of the sort. His promise and assurance that I had everything and would not need to buy anything else because the ultimate ‘Ultimate’ package has everything was nothing but a lie to get a sale.

AVG are apologising for the inconvenience, but it’s not an inconvenience, it’s fraud. I was told various things that weren’t true to secure a sale. That is fraudulent and while the agent may have been acting without authorisation, he was still an employee acting on behalf of AVG, so AVG are still responsible.

Apparently someone senior will be calling me, but I’m unsure why. I like AVG products, but fraudulent practices to secure sales is simply not acceptable. I will wait to see what they say, but then I am reporting this as fraud to the authorities and when my subscription ends next year, I will be going elsewhere.
