Cancel auto-renewal & refund

How do I go about getting a refund. I note in my account that money has just been taken from my  account for what I assume is an auto-renewal after a year. I do not wish to renew since each time I ran the software that I paid for, if it found an issue, it did not solve the issue. Its solution was to ask me to buy another AVG product, to solve it, which I think is totally unreasonable.
