I have fixed the problem by rebooting the computer. I'm sorry for having wasted your time.
On the Dashboard, the email scanner has a message "Not Fully Protected" I have clicked on the Fix Now button, but the virus is still there.
In the settings for Email Scanner there is the message "VIRUS" directly above the heading "Scanning Properties"
Any ideas how to get rid of this virus? I haven't been able to establish the name of the virus.
