Can't get to a place to uninstall AVG so I can reinstall it

I am working in a computer lab at our school and one of the Mac desktops has the following going on:
AVG does not appear in the menu bar at the top of the screen. AVG does not appear in the Applications list.  When I attempt to install a free version, I get an error msg saying I need to uninstall the older version before I can install the newer version.  Any ideas of how I can get this resolved? At one point we did have free AVG as an application, but no longer.
