I understand that you are not able to reinstall or get the updates for the AVG.
In this case I kindly request you to uninstall the AVG completely using this article and try to reinstall it.

Hi I have done the above and now when i try to open AVG i get the 
error message C/programs/AVG/Antivirus/AVGUI.exe

Craig, sorry for the inconvenience caused.
I'd request you to remove AVG traces completely using AVG Clear tool and reinstall it.
