Do you have any security application installed in your PC other than AVG?
Having more than 1 security application in the same PC will lead to conflict, in this case unsuccessful installation.
If yes, kindly uninstall those and use the clear tool to remove the old traces of the unsuccessfully AVG Free installation :

Restart the PC and try to install the AVG Free.

I recently got a UI error message on my free antivirus. Saying it couldn't load.
I tried the steps to repair it but that didn't work. I then uninstalled it and went to reinstall it (under admin rights on Windows 10). I get to the stage where it looks 99% complete with the green line filling up but then the box just disappears without completing it. There is no sign of the AVG being installed on my PC.
Any ideas - many thanks. Oh and treat me nicely, I have the technical knowhow of a brick
