Sorry for the delay in replying I have been trying several things to fix this problem. I have tried these things
1. Removal and reinstall as per your instructions
2. removal using AVG_Clear and reinstall
3. Removal using AVG_Remover and reinstall
4. Running a online virus scanner
This has improved the situation but it still switches off (Behavior shield) about every 24-36 hours, instead of every 1-2 hours

I have the free version and something keeps turning the computer protection OFF. the Web & Email protection is still ON.
Is there a log file or something I can us to find out what is turning it OFF

May I ask what happens when you try to turn on "behavior shield"?
If it doesn't respond, then perform repair of AVG Antivirus free as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Repair-AVG-Antivirus) and check the status.

I have sent an email to collect AVG error logs from your PC and cascade it to our senior team.
They will analyze the logs to identify the root cause of the issue and contact you via email.
