I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. I would suggest you to disable AVG Self protection and check if that resolves the PC slowdown issue.
Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Troubleshooting. Then uncheck "Enable AVG Self protection mode".
Also you can disable ads on AVG program completely. Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->General->Pop-Ups. Then uncheck "Show pop up ads for other AVG products".
My computer only started to run slow since I purchased AVG security without the 'Speed up your computer' product. Now all I get is a slow running laptop and Ad's asking me for money to buy AVG 'Speed up product' !! I'm wondering if I'm missing something here? No slow laptop before AVG, No Ad's requesting money to have my laptop the way it was before AVG.
