Constant 1-second pop-ups despite being in 'silent mode'

'SILENT MODE' DOESN'T EVEN TURN OFF THE POP-UPS, IT JUST CLOSES THEM 1 SECOND AFTER THEY OPEN. For example; I will be typing something, then there will be an AVG pop-up for 1 second before closing. I then have to click on the original window again to keep typing. It does this so often I'm going insane. How can I turn off notifications FOR REAL. Like, TURN THEM OFF COMPLETELY. I love AVG as a program, but seriously these pop-ups are really pushing me over the edge. I have no idea if this is a common problem or if it's a unique issue just with my system. 

PS. I've had 2 in the time I've written this post.
