I downloaded and printed out the instructions for deactivating the sleep program:
1. All functions in the Dashboard
2. Selected Show Background and Startup Programs
and that's as far as the program lets me go. It just spins and spins. All other facets of the AVG seem to be working ok.

Are you trying to wake the programs which were put to sleep using AVG PC TuneUp? Please try to repair AVG PC TuneUp and check if that resolve the issue.
To repair your AVG please follow these instructions:
Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Note: Click Settings first if Control Panel is not available in the Start menu.
Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
Select AVG PC TuneUp in the list of programs.
Click the Change or Change/Remove button.
Select Repair.
Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer.
