Deep Scan locking up at 28%

It hangs at SVC: wlidsvc>C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe.  Eventually it displays the threat found screen.

In this instance it was the wlidsvc service.  It's a different service each time I run it.

Thank you for your help.

Finally figured it out!

The "C:\Avast! Sandbox" is a hidden directory.  The folder didn't show in the File Explorer, even with display hidden files turned on. This folder has special ACL permissions preventing it from displaying.  From a command prompt you can CD "C:\Avast! Sandbox" and see the folder.

I tried to delete the folder but access was denied.  To delete this folder you need to change permissions on the "C:\Avast! Sandbox" folder and all of the sub folders.

This can be done with CACLS. Unfortunately, you cannot change permissions while Windows is running. You must boot your PC in Safe Mode and then change permissions to remove the folder.

Here are the steps I took to remove this folder.

  1. Login into Windows
  2. Press the Windows Key + R
  3. Type in MSCONFIG and press enter.
  4. In the MSCONFIG window select the BOOT tab.
  5. Check “Safe Boot” and “Alternate Shell” then click OK.
  6. On the window that pops up click REBOOT You PC will reboot.
  7. Login with your normal credentials.  Windows will drop to a command prompt. The prompt should be C:\Windows\System32. If not the type CD C:\Windows\System32 and press enter.
  8. At the prompt type: CACLS "C:\Avast! Sandbox" /T /E /P {Your Login Name}:F and press enter.   Be sure to replace {Your Login Name} with your login name.  You shouldn't see any access denied messages.
  9. Next type: RMDIR /S "C:\Avast! Sandbox" and press enter.
  10. The folder should be gone. You can verify this by typing: DIR "C:\Avast! Sandbox" and pressing enter.  You should see a file not found message.
  11. Next type: MSCONFIG and press enter.
  12. In the MSCONFIG window select the BOOT tab.
  13. Uncheck “Alternate Shell” and “Safe Boot” then click OK.
  14. On the window that pops up click REBOOT.
Your PC will reboot. You should be back to a normal Windows login. Try running the Deep Scan again.  For me, it appeared it was going to hang and fail again. Eventually it continued and finished the scan.

I hope this helps someone.

I appreciate the help everyone’s patients.

Thanks

Deep Scan hangs at 28% while scanning SVC:XBoxGipSvc>C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe.  It eventually says that I have 5 Rootkit Threats. I have performed a boot time scan, scanned for Rootkits with other apps which came up clean, restarted several times, made sure I have all the latest updates, cleaned the Registry, etc.

It's telling me there is a "C:\avast! sandbox" Rootkit threat.  Avast is not installed.

I have been able to Deep Scan in the past without issue.  This is a recent development.  Like since the last AVG update development.

All of my research online suggest this is a fairly common issue. But there is no fixes, other than AVG Support wanting to remoting into to the afflicted PC.

I'm at a loss.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Frank, thank you for sharing this work around here which could help other users.
Appreciate your efforts.

Hello Hemlut,

I appreciate your time and effort in sharing this information.
Thank you.

While I was waiting on a responce to my post I used the AVG clear tool to remove AVG.  I then reinstalled it.  I get the same error.  A repair doesn't seem neccessary at this point. Do you still want me to perform a repair?

Thanks
